Doctoral School was held at the department

The first international doctoral summer school for urban geopolitics took place from June 5 to 10 at V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University at the Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies together with the University of Oslo (Norway).

The organizers of the event were D.Sc. in Geography, Honored Professor of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University Liudmyla Niemets and D.Sc. in Geography, Professor of the Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies, Head of the Department of Human Geography of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Kostiantyn Mezentsev. The main task of the international doctoral school was to coordinate efforts of grantors, project participants, academic and postgraduate students to develop common methodology for urban identity research, to identify a single algorithm of field research, etc.

Scientists from UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Germany and Ukraine attended the Doctoral School. 6 lectures by foreign speakers were held within the framework of the school, 20 international experts were involved in the work. In addition to the Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies representatives of the Faculty of Sociology took part in the doctoral school.

Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work of the University Anton Panteleimonov opened the First Doctoral School, wished productive work to the participants of the school. The post-graduate students of the Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies Marina Lohvinova, Olha Suptelo and Oleksiy Zadezentsev (post-graduate students Marina Lohvinova, Olha Suptelo and their supervisor professor Liudmyla Niemets are participants of the international project " Ukrainian geopolitical fault-line cities: urban identities, geopolitics and urban policy”, funded by the Research Council of Norway).

On June 6 an urban-training "Identity of the Urban Space: Modern Challenges and Solutions" was held within the framework of the School, it was attended by representatives of local government, public organizations and leading scientists of Ukraine on the issues of the urban space development. During the training, the issue of urban identity and symbolism of space, toponymy as a identity reflection of the urban space, identity of the city of Kharkiv in the aspect of the European space were considered.

During the field stage participants of the First International Doctoral Summer School on City Geopolitics got acquainted with peculiarities of the urban space formation of the city of Kharkiv. For research purposes, they examined the objects of the Soviet heritage of the city, which greatly influenced the formation of modern identity. They visited a town of modular type for forced migrants and got acquainted with their everyday life and peculiarities of residence, problems and difficulties.

The research component of the school required visits to the cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, where field research was conducted.

The School was finished the discussion of all the participants by the results of all stages of work. A number of upcoming events on project implementation, preparation of publications in international editions, etc. were discussed.
