On April 26, 2023, A workshop on the topic: "Contemporary education: today for the future" was held at the Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies.
Head of the department prof. Liudmyla NIEMETS in her introductory speech emphasized the relevance of the workshop topic and the pressing challenges facing geographical education in Ukraine, namely: restoration and development of the intellectual potential of Ukraine, preservation of geography as a science and an academic discipline, defense of its positions in secondary and higher schools, which possible only if the efforts of educators and scientists are consolidated.
The Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work of the Karazin University Prof. Oleksandr HOLOVKO. spoke with a welcome speech and support for the idea and the topic of the workshop.
Speakers of the workshop were lecturers and PhD students of the department who work directly in the field of secondary education and are practicing teachers.
Maryna LOHVYNOVA, Doctor of Philosophy, director of the Kharkiv Secondary School of I-III degrees No. 2 of the Kharkiv City Council of Kharkiv Region, in her report revealed the place of geography in the programs of the general secondary school, the New Ukrainian School (NUS).
Daria VENHRYN, PhD student of the department, teacher of geography at the private school "PushSchool" and Olga SUPTELO, PhD in Earth Sciences, graduate of the department's graduate school, teacher of the Kharkiv Lyceum "IT Step School Kharkiv", shared their experience of working in private schools, revealed the advantages and disadvantages of working in similar institutions.
Scientists and educators from different regions of Ukraine also joined the discussion.
Prof. Kateryna SEHIDA remarked on the peculiarities of the organization of geography teacher training in higher education institutions, in particular – Karazin University.
Assoc. Prof. Taras POGREBSKY, head of the Department of Economic and Social Geography of Volyn National University named after Lesia Ukrainka, spoke about the peculiarities of geography teacher training at his university.
Prof. Kostyantyn MEZENTSEV, head of the Department of Economic and Social Geography of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, outlined the current issues of geography teacher training in contemporary conditions.
The reports and performances aroused interest among those present and a lively discussion. More than 30 scientists, students and PhD students from different regions of Ukraine took part in the workshop.
