On April 13, 2024, Liliya Shchelkunova passed away at the age of 81. She was an engineer at the K. Niemets Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies, Faculty of Geology, Geography, Recreation and Tourism of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Liliya has worked in the faculty staff for almost 30 years. From April 1997 to July 2012, she worked in the dean's office of the Faculty of Geology and Geography. From July 23, 2012 until the last days of her life, she worked as an engineer of the 1st category at the K. Niemets Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies. She was distinguished by incredible responsibility, knowledge of her business, kindness, sensitivity. She was respected and known not only by faculty members, but also by colleagues from the entire university. She was lively, optimistic, always ready to give advice, supported and energized those around her.
Bright memory of Liliya, she will forever remain in our thoughts and hearts.

Welcome to the official web-site of K.Niemets Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

The department carries out training bachelors on a specialty 106 "Geography", educational and professional programs "Economic, Social Geography and Regional Development" and "Geography of Recreation and Tourism"; and masters in specialty 106 "Geography", educational and professional programs "Economic, Social Geography and Regional Development", "Geography of Recreation and Tourism" and "Geographic Information Systems in Areal Management"; and on a specialty 014.07 «Secondary education (Geography)», educational and professional program «Geography, Economics, Regional Studies and Tourist Work».

Professional training is carried out by 4 DSc., professors, 9 PhD, associate professors.

The department teaches professionally oriented and special courses: "Fundamentals of Human Geography", "Fundamentals of Social Geography", "Geography of the World Economy", "Regional Human Geography", "Geographic Information Systems", "Regional Problems of Sustainable Development", "Basics of Geographic Modeling", "Regional Studies", "Excursion Studies", "Business Management", "Geopolitics", "Recreational Country Studies", "Geography of Domestic Tourism ", "External connections of Ukraine" and others. Much attention is paid to the study of modern computer technologies and their application in the teaching and research work of students. Students learn foreign languages ​​(English, French, German and others if desired). There is an educational laboratories at the department.

Educational and industrial practices of students are conducted not only within their region, but also in other regions of Ukraine, in particular in Transcarpathia, Lviv, Kiev, Chernivtsi and the neighboring countries. Annually, within the framework of the industrial practice, a comprehensive training and research expedition is conducted in districts of Kharkov region.

The Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies named after Kostiantyn NIEMETS has signed agreements on academic mobility and cooperation with the University of Oradea (Romania), the University of Girona (Spain), Tallinn University (Estonia), Akdeniz University (Turkey), University of Ostrava (Czech Republic) within the Erasmus+ program.

The knowledge and scientific and practical skills of our graduates fully correspond to the competence of educational programs. Graduates of the Department of Human Geography and Regional Studies have the following competencies:

  4. Competence in the natural sciences and technology.
  5. Information and digital competence.
  6. Ability to learn throughout life and self-improvement.

Graduates of the department work in government bodies, including committees of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, in research institutions, secondary, secondary special and higher educational institutions, in banking and commercial structures.

Teachers and staff of the department profess the principles of academic integrity and professionalism, possess all professional competences, they are creative and know how to motivate students.
